By now you’ve probably heard of Billericate.
It is a hairdressing salon located in downtown Houston, Texas, and it has been around for over 50 years.
In 2018, the Houston Chronicle reported that the Houston, TX, salon was the first in the nation to offer hairdressing lessons.
Billericates hair dressers, known as “hairdress” for their long black hair, are paid to give short haircuts for $25 per session.
“I think it is important that we have some type of recognition for our work and some recognition for the profession,” said Billerictea’s owner and stylist, Alisha Hairstyles.
“We do have to earn our livings and keep our hair from falling out and we have to keep our clients happy.”
She said that her salon was recently ranked as one of the top five best hairdresses in the world by USA Today.
She said she’s glad that she now has a career in hair and she’s happy to see that she can continue to provide this service for the city of Houston.
“Houston is the second largest city in the country and one of my clients are all women, so it is a very small town and I think it’s a great recognition for us,” she said.
Hairstylists in Houston work at various levels, but they generally have a few hours of training per week, Hairstyle’s owner said.
The salon does not offer any classes on the weekends, but Hairstores staff have the opportunity to go on the road to teach at weddings and other events.
Hairtiys salon is located in the city’s historic downtown, but the space is mostly occupied by the store’s regular customers.
“They come in, they go out and they come back.
I think they are really appreciative of that,” Hairstleres owner said of the regular customers she sees each week.
The Houston Chronicle published a list of the best hairdressers in the U.S. in 2018, which included Billericata’s and Hairstyles.
In an email to HuffPost, the salon said it was not able to respond to specific queries.
“There is a small group of women who are so dedicated to their craft that we feel a responsibility to tell their stories,” the salon’s owner wrote.
Hairdresses have long been a staple of the Houston area.
According to the Houston Area Chamber of Commerce, there are more than 50 hairdresses in Houston, including those at Billericatas, Hairdryders, Hairtyls, Haightys, Haistles and other hairdressed salon.
But as Hairstliers grew in popularity, the demand for hairdrides has been growing.
Houston, which boasts one of America’s most diverse populations, has the third highest concentration of hairddressers per capita in the United States, according to the American Bar Association.
According a 2018 survey by the Houston Business Journal, more than 80 percent of hairstylers in Houston said they would consider leaving the industry if it wasn’t for the rising cost of living.
Hairstyles owner said that she is not worried about the business dying.
“When you’re growing and you’re getting a little bit older and you’ve been through this for a while, you realize the price of living in Houston is way out of control and the cost of hair is way too high,” she told HuffPost.
